Jesus Our Teacher is in full swing at Jeffreys Bay Primary School! The kids started back to school a few weeks ago after their summer break. For all of you who might find that a little strange...Africa is in a completely different hemisphere which causes their seasons to be a bit different than ours. Their Summer break is from December to the end of January. This semester I will be teaching a 6th grade class with my fellow teammate Raelynn. We will be teaching every Friday from 7:40-8:10. I was a bit nervous at first because I know that 6th graders can be a bit crazy at times. I was also a bit sad on my first day because part of me wished that I would walk into a class that was filled with all of my little middle schoolers from church! (I miss all of you very much!) Despite all of my worries the children in our J.O.T class are fantastic! They are very well behaved, and they are filled with a lot of energy. I was really surprised to see a class of 25 kids who were all very excited to study the word of God. They are excited, inquisitive, and thirsty for the more.
Last Friday was our first day of class. We decided that since it was our first day that it was a good idea to get to know the kids and for the kids to get to know us as well. We asked the kids to write down any question that they wanted us to answer. The questions were mostly all personal questions about family, pets, boyfriends, and random questions about food. After we answered the question the child who asked the question had to also answer it. It was a lot of fun, and I feel like the children really had a better idea of who we are.
Yesterdays topic was about love since it was the day after Valentines Day. We started off the day with a quick game of 'Honey If You Love Me Smile'! The kids found this game completely absurd! They thought it was stupid, but we encouraged them to give it a chance. They started to enjoy it more after they fully grasped the concept. After the game we had the kids do a quickwrite on what love meant to them. A lot of them had some really good answers, and a few didn't really have a clue on what love actually was. After the quickwrite we discussed what the scriptures say about love. We had the kids look at 1 Corinthians 13 and 1 John 4. We talked about how Jesus is all about love. The kids were very interested in a lot of the passages that we looked at, and that really makes me excited to see their excitement when it comes to reading scripture.
I know many of you are praying for the clinic and for me as well. I just ask that all of you begin to pray for the children in this J.O.T. class. Pray for the our lessons, the teachers at the school, and for the kids to just embrace the Lord with all of their hearts. These kids are the future leaders in this community. They are ultimately the people who are going to make a difference in Jeffreys Bay.
Much Love to all.
