Have you ever met someone who instantly broke your heart before you even speak a word to them? I encountered this situation on Monday afternoon at the clinic. This older white man looked very confused and he looked like he was in a great deal of pain. As soon as I saw him, my heart just broke to pieces. He looked confused, lost, and he had a look of pain on his face. These words could go to describe his physical and spiritual state. I greeted him and escorted him to the "emergency room." All of the sisters were quite busy so I decided to talk to him and hopefully take his mind off his pain. As soon as I said hello to him, he took his shirt off to show me his stab wound. Len Estress was stabbed two days before by a few men in Jeffreys Bay. He said he was just taking care of some business. He went ahead and began to tell me his life story. He life story sounded almost a little too dangerous to be true, but he had scars to prove every story. Len has broken 83 bones in his body, survived Meningitis, and walked away from 2 deadly automobile accidents. He was also a drug addict and an alcoholic for many years. He is still struggling, but I know that I change will be coming soon. As he was telling his story, I noticed that he had a cross dangling from his neck. I asked if he was a believer, and he simply gave a chuckle of disbelief. He went on to tell me that Christianity is a bunch of mind games and he just wants to take control of his own life. I told him that he should have been dead a long time ago with everything that he has been through, but something greater than him seems to be taking control. He said it was pure luck. I know that it was the Lord. The sisters finally got to Len after about an hour, and they said that he needed to come to the clinic every day for about 14 days. Len's wound was very swollen and it had a lot of blood and liquid under his stitches. They put a small drain in his incision at the hospital a few days before and the sisters could not take it out until the swelling was down. Len was terribly upset and probably annoyed , but I knew that I needed to say something radical at this point. I told Len that my team and I would be praying for the swelling. He laughed and told me to do something better with my time. But I knew that this man was well worth my time. This man has a special place in my heart, and I knew that I wanted to experience the Lord more than anything in the world.
Monday night was a very emotional night for me. I just remember pretty much promising this man that his swelling would be down, and I also remember how the sisters found it unlikely for the swelling to go down within a day. I told my entire team the amazing story from the day, and we were praying hardcore for Len. Well Len did not come back on Tuesday, but he came back on Wednesday. So on Wednesday I got the interesting pleasure of taking out Len's drain! The swelling was down! I was extremely excited, but I knew that I still had a long way to go with this man. I promise that if something else happens with Len I will post it, but at this time I just ask for everyone to pray for Len. I know that the Lord wants to use his life stories to reach out to others.
