My broom and My Lesson

I will be the first to admit that I am definitely a messy person.  I really don't have a lot of fun cleaning anything.  If you were a fly in my house on a Sunday afternoon, you would probably hear my mom say something about my messy and cluttered room.  I would usually reply with a smart comment to try to get myself out of the situation for as long as I possibly can.  And once I get around to actually obeying my mother, I will secretly complain in my head.   I try to justify the mess by stating that it is simply a lot easier to find things in messy piles rather than plundering through drawers.  When I did Work Crew a couple summers ago the Lord totally taught me a lesson in serving Him even in activities that I do not enjoy.  Well of course he had to teach me through cleaning.  For five weeks I cleaned toilets, showers, and lots of dishes.  After those amazing 5 weeks, I thought that portion of the lesson was completed.  Once again I am totally wrong in trying to figure Him out.  That same lesson has been continued here in Africa.  I felt a call to the Pellsrus Clinic with a complete understanding of the intern job description.  I was told that I would minister to the patients, weigh babies, and do AIDS/TB counseling.  Katie and I were both pretty pumped on our first day.  We both arrived in our best attire, which consisted of jeans and a clean t-shirt.  (Katie Ely is my ministry partner.  Be sure to check out her blog!)  As we were waiting for further instructions, I saw Sister Primrose come down the hall in her African housecoat with bold colors and her head wrap carrying 2 brooms and a mop bucket.  In my head I am having a quick chat with the Lord, but at this point I know He is laughing at me.  She is getting closer and closer.  Sister gently places the brooms in our hands, and gives us the biggest hug.  She says Bless you my child in a very heavy Xichosa accent.  At this point everything I was pretty much broken inside.  Sister Primrose cleans the clinic everyday, and she does everything with so much joy.  I am enjoying every minute of mopping and sweeping with her. Katie and I love to walk into the cleaning closet to find her with her feet elevated on a wooden crate reading magazines. It makes us feel really good to know that she is relaxing, and having a little alone time.  Sometimes she will also sit in the out of order stall so she can read her bible.  She is so inspiring and also a blessing to work with.  But you know I just knew that my ministry would mostly involve patients and children.  But once again I am reminded that I put the Lords plan in a box most of the time.  I try to put a limit on the Spirit, but He continues to show me that He is a God who does not work within limitations.
Much love to all…
